Climbing Winston-Salem has several classic rock climbing destinations within 30-40 mins of downtown. The quartzite cliffs of the Sauratown mountain range dominate the skyline north of town, and offer fun, high-adventure climbing. Moore's Wall has a variety of traditional routes that range from 5.4-5.13, and has become a popular destination for bouldering as well. Pilot Mountain is a very accessible climbing area that is popular with beginners and seasoned climbers alike. It has many single-pitch routes that can be top-roped, and has a number of high-quality sport routes as well. In the event of rain, or for those who like to do their climbing indoors, there are two bouldering gyms in town: RockBox and Gnarwall.
Mountain Biking For those who like two-wheeled fun, the rolling terrain of the NC foothills offer some great nearby options. Hobby Park is located within the city of Winston-Salem and offers fun single track riding. For those willing to drive 45-50 minutes from town, Warrior Creek offers 13 miles of trails that are typically described as "epic," "sick," or something along those lines. Slightly closer to town are the Moore's Springs trails are 30-40 minutes from downtown and feature 9 miles of single track through the Sauratown mountains, just at the foot of Hanging Rock.
Hiking The two classic hiking destinations for those visiting Winston-Salem are: Pilot Mountain State Park: Located 25 minutes from the conference site, this park offers something for everyone. You are able to drive nearly to the top of the mountain to take in some breathtaking views of the surrounding area, and hike miles of trails that range from short jaunts to long, strenuous hikes. Hanging Rock State Park: A short, 40 minute drive from downtown brings you to one of the most popular parks in NC. Hanging rock offers miles of hiking trails. If you visit, be sure to hike to the Hanging Rock, the views are breathtaking!
Paddling Winston-Salem is located in the Yadkin River Valley, and you can't drive too far without finding some flowing water. Recommendations vary dramatically depending on rainfall and river levels, but don't leave your boats behind, chances are there will be a lake, river or creek for you enjoy.
