Whitewater Rescue and MedicineDates: Next course TBA Location: Roanoke, VA Cost: $200 (includes ACA SWR L3 course) Canoe rental (plus shuttle, PFD and paddle) $40 Eligibility: Current residents of any year of training in good standing in an accredited program. All specialties welcomed. Objectives: * Apply evidence based medicine in pre-hospital and in hospital resuscitation of drowning patient. * Demonstrate resuscitation skills using high fidelity simulation. * Discuss current literature pertaining to drowning and submersion injuries * Complete ACA Level 3 River Rescue and Safety Skills course - Promote proactive prevention of river accidents and injuries. - Develop and practice key self-rescue skills. - Identify and avoid river hazards by understanding hydrology, hazards, and river features. - Focus on fast, low-risk strategies for early management of river accidents - Practice methods for recovering swimmers, and loose boats and equipment * Network with other residents with common interest in wilderness medicine * Develop multi-specialty team approach to care of submersion injury patients ACA Instructor Training made possible by generous funding from Carilion Clinic Trauma Services, Dept of Emergency Medicine and Community Outreach. |
