Wilderness Medicine Journal Club

About The Journal Club

Join the Virginia Tech Carilion Wilderness Medicine Fellowship for a virtual wilderness medicine journal club series. This series began in Fall 2020, as a means of staying connected with other wilderness medicine groups during COVID quarantine. Over time, it has morphed into a way for us to interact and learn in a collaborative and engaging environment. We have been joined by wilderness medicine enthusiasts from across the country and around the world. We are often joined by topic experts who have provided their significant knowledge and experience! Wilderness medicine and EMS fellowship directors, EMS and SAR team directors, WMS guidelines authors, members of the WMS board of directors, AIARE instructors, toxinologists, hyperbaric experts and more have lent us their expertise.

This journal club series is designed for students in healthcare fields and resident and fellow physicians, but anyone interested is welcome to join. Each event lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and is focused on a different topic within wilderness medicine. During each session, we present and discuss one of the WMS guidelines, review and critique related research journal articles, and work through case scenarios. We also discuss how to become more involved with the Wilderness Medical Society, resources for practical training and experience, and how to implement wilderness medicine into your career.
